Hi. I am calling this post best plastic kitchen compost bin. By having an indoor organic kitchen waste collector, you can collect kitchen scraps before adding them to an outdoor compost bin. Keeps things neater in the kitchen too.
Why would a best plastic kitchen compost bin come in handy? Well, experts allege that at least a quarter of kitchen household organic waste can be used for making compost, instead of just throwing this useful waste into the trash, where it will eventually end up on some landfill site.
Let’s check out a cost effective solution to this problem in the form of a plastic kitchen compost bin that can be used indoors.
Of course, if you need something bigger, click here for large capacity compost bins for outdoor use.

Questions and Answers
Could you tell me a little bit more about the Carbon Filter thingy?
Well, it basically has this carbon filter type thingy in the lid that blocks most smells inside the bin from getting out when the lid is closed. The lid fits nice and tight and also keeps out pests and helps the filter to do its job – i.e. any air exchange with the outside world goes through the carbon filter and not through the sides of the lid.
The carbon filter should be replaced every 3 months or so. There seems to be replacement carbon filters available.
This looks small enough to mount against a wall?
Yes, it would be possible. There are notches on the back of this small kitchen compost bin that makes it possible to mount it to a wall or even inside a cabinet. These notches allow this kitchen composter to be suspended from two nails or screws, with the screws or nails fitting in notches on the back.
Do I need to remove the carbon filter when I want to wash the compost bin?
Yes, it would be best to remove the filter before washing the compost bin. It should also be easier to wash the filter holder after removing it from the bin lid. As stated earlier, the bin is dishwasher safe and you should be able to use most regular detergent type cleaners for cleaning the bin.
By cleaning it every now and again, you will ensure you have an odor-free kitchen compost bin.

Notes on Quality and Operation
The Exaco ECO-2000 kitchen compost waste collector is made from high quality plastic and is easy to clean and use inside the house.
Compost bins generally need to allow some oxygen to get to the compost inside, otherwise you’ll get bad anaerobic bacterial growth. This type of bacteria are usually responsible for the bad smells and can also prevent you from making a really good compost.
Luckily this odor-free kitchen compost bin has an carbon air filter to help the compost inside breathe, which promotes the growth of good bacteria, while still filtering unwanted smells. It is also fruit-fly proof.

– 2021 Update –
The Exaco ECO-2000 is currently unavailable for purchase. I think the kitchen compost bin below would be a good alternative :
The KaryHome mountable kitchen compost bin is made from green plastic, and has a 1.3 gallon/ 5-liter capacity. The plastic is non-toxic, sturdy and easily cleanable using soap and water.
You can mount this bin against a wall or cabinet door to have it handy, while not cluttering up counter top workspace (of which there is usually precious little once you start preparing food and cooking). A hanging hook for cupboard doors, plus adhesive tape for wall mounting is provided with the bin.
Tenby Living Countertop Kitchen Compost Bin
The second kitchen bin I will be looking at in this best plastic kitchen compost bin review is the TENBY LIVING countertop compost bin for kitchen food waste.
This little countertop bin is perfect to keep around for quickly disposing of kitchen scraps without having to carry the waste outside. You can then at a later stage empty the kitchen compost bin into your outside compost system. Saves you a lot of time in the end.
Features and Specs
- Stylish modern design with cute leaf top handle
- Small enough to fit countertop – yet large enough to hold waste
- Tight fitting lid keeps pests out and odors inside
- Easy to carry by the handle to where you need it
- 1,2 gallon waste capacity
- Size (in inches): 8.3 by 7.5 by 11.2
Questions and Answers
Will the plastic of the bin start to smell after a while?
I don’t think so. It is made from pretty hard kind of plastic, which usually doesn’t absorb smells too easily. You could use some sort of bin bag with it, although it already has a basket on the inside. There is a presser disc on the inside as well to compress the compost towards the bottom. This will squish the “compost tea” out.
It is of course a good idea to wash it once in a while out after you have emptied it – would probably help keep odors from developing unnecessarily.
Keep in mind : Adding meat or dairy scraps to you kitchen waste bin may possibly end up adding not-so-swell smells as well. |
Does this countertop kitchen compost bin have carbon filters in it?
No, it does not have any carbon odor filters built in. That is not necessary a huge minus – it keeps things simple and cheap.
Notes on Quality and Operation
This is the perfect little kitchen countertop compost bin for a small family. A larger family may generate more kitchen waste than this cute little kitchen compost bin could handle.
If the slats at the bottom seem hard to clean – let it soak in some mild soapy solution for a few minutes. It should come clean.

– 2021 Update –
It seems that the TENBY LIVING countertop compost bin is not available at present. I’d like to suggest an alternative :
The OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean plastic kitchen compost bin comes in two sizes, 0.75 Gallon (2.8L) and 1.75 Gallons. It is also available in four different colors – white/green, white/grey, charcoal/green and charcoal/grey.
The lid flips up so that you can fill it, and when the lid is closed, it keeps any smells inside the container, and keeps away those annoying little fruit flies that always seem to materialize from out of nowhere. It has smooth interior walls, so that scraps will not stick to it as easily.
It has a rotating handle that flips up, for when you want to take the kitchen scraps you have collected to your compost heap outside.
Plastic Kitchen Compost Bins – Final Thoughts
If you have a small family or if you don’t generate very much kitchen waste, the smaller TENBY LIVING kitchen compost bin may be just the ticket.
The EXACO Eco-200 has double the capacity, so that would be a better bin for a larger family. The EXACO ECO 200 bin also has a carbon air filter – if that is something you demand as something important in your kitchen bin.
Thank you for reading this best plastic kitchen compost bin review. I hope you find the best indoor compost bin for your home! |
