If you’ve ever used a string trimmer to cut grass and weeds you’ll know that weight can become an issue after 20 minutes or more of continual use. I started to wonder since I’ve now done both gasoline and battery powered string trimmer posts on this site already so we can see if the corded models may offer a weight decrease of some sorts.
The gas model has a gasoline engine mounted on the trimmer and the battery powered models have the added weight of the battery to the electrical motor. Something with a cord thus would have only the weight of the electric motor on the frame right? So let’s avail ourselves with a tail and look at a couple of corded electric string trimmers.

The 0.080 dual trimmer line is plenty thick so it should wack weeds like a champ. The 10 amp motor on this should give it all the power it needs. As this is a corded string trimmer, you can keep going for as long as you want (or can) since there is no battery that will run flat or gas tank that can go empty.
The electric motor promises smooth, dependable operation. It isn’t very noisy either, especially when you compare it to gas trimmers.
The trimmer itself is about 13 x 31.5 x 5.1 inches and weighs in at 10 pounds. New trimmer line is fed automatically when you ease off on the power trigger and the new line is fed just before the spool stops spinning.

Black&Decker 14-inch Corded String Trimmer
Let’s look another corded electric string trimmer. Black&Decker is a well known international brand manufacturing a variety of power tools and garden equipment. This 14-inch offering from them looks pretty solid. I’ll list some features. It is called the Black&Decker BESTA510 model.
Some Features and Specs
- 120 volt 6.5 amp motor
- Lightweight at around 5 lbs
- Edger wheel allows trimmer to do edge trimming duties
- 0.065 line with auto feed spool
- Cord retention system locks in cord preventing accidental disconnects
Some Thoughts On This String Trimmer
The trimmer is pretty lightweight and well balanced compared to bigger (and badder) models. Perfect for everybody whose name is not Clark Kent and that doesn’t have the weird habit of wearing their underpants over their pants.
While the motor on this electric string trimmer has a decent amount of power, this is not a heavy duty machine, meant mainly for regular garden trimming. Very thick patches of weeds could tax it, especially if there a tree saplings mixed in. Clear these areas gradually with the trimmer, instead of just jumping right in.
The auto feed system feeds a little trimmer line every time the trigger is pulled. The adjustable shaft makes it easy to store and get the balance right for your body length. The Edger wheel attached to the bottom makes it possible to use this trimmer to tidy up the edges of lawns, keeping pathways and flower beds looking neat.
This corded trimmer weighs around 4-5 pounds. Nice and lightweight.
Some Questions and Answers
Do you have to tap the bottom of the spool to feed more trimmer line?
On bump feed models you do have to do that to feed more trimmer line. On this Black&Decker trimmer though, the automatic spool feed feeds more string without the need to tap the spool.
Do this corded trimmer connect with a 2 or 3 prong plug?
The Besta510 string trimmer takes 2-prong power plugs. The cord retention system on it will help prevent the plug accidentally unplugging while trimming.
This corded string trimmer is getting pretty positive reviews overall on Amazon.com. Click here to go read more about it.
Both these electric corded trimmers are great value and worth a closer look.
